Professor Jorg Imberger

Professor Jörg Imberger is passionate about his research.

His interests include eco-hydraulics, lake hydrobiology and human decision processes. He graduated as a Civil Engineer, did a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and taught Mathematics for a number of years.

In the past 20 years he has devoted most of his energies to field work in lakes in all continents of the world; the focus has been on understanding the underlying transport and mixing processes that control the health of the lake ecosystem. Most recently he has pioneered real time self learning management systems that allow a natural ecosystem to be managed for multiple objectives.

Jörg sees Ph D students as part of a team, joining him in the field to share his curiosity for nature. He strongly believes humans will only change their exploitation of nature and devastation of biodiversity when confronted with clear explanations of the consequences of their actions; this can only be achieved through a thorough understanding of the processes underlying the health of an ecosystem.

However, even this does not seem to be motivate required behavioural change, so recently he has become interested in understanding behavioural response of humans to climate change.

His joy of field work is captured in his photographs that can be viewed at http://gaspar.cwr.uwa.edu.au:5103/panorama/ and his achievements are described at http://www.cwr.uwa.edu.au/
