Winthrop Professor Lyle Palmer

Professor Lyle Palmer

Industry dwells with academia perfectly amicably in Lyle Palmer's work.

At the age of 36 Winthrop Professor Lyle Palmer has already made some great and impressive achievements. When he took on the Foundation Chair of Epidemiology he became one of the youngest scientists to receive such an auspicious appointment.

More than just a Medical Researcher, Palmer is also a talented businessman being recently named in WA Business News as the state's top young performer in their annual 40-under-40.

His Laboratory for Genetic Epidemiology at the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research has attracted over $15 million in funding from many national and international organisations allowing the Laboratory to conduct research at the highest level.

From the discovery of a gene that can reduce the risk of developing Asthma by 50 per cent to helping implement a software system that could dramatically improve the efficiency of clinical trials, Palmer is adamant that his work could not be carried out without his group's strong links to industry.

Ever busy, Winthrop Professor Palmer is currently juggling more than 40 research projects, which he is sure could not be done so successfully without the talented students and colleagues that make up the team that he heads.
