Professor Colin Raston

Professor Colin Raston

Going "green" has become a major goal of many companies around the world.

While most would think such a goal could only result in the loss of profit, the research of people such as Colin Raston, Professor of Chemistry, shows that this may not necessarily be the case—in fact making a company green can actually result in an increase in profits and saving of expenditure.

Green Chemistry, the Professor's speciality, is defined as carrying out chemical activities in such a way that hazardous substances are not used or generated, and it is increasingly popular with many organizations.

The US-based chemicals company, Dupont, saved one billion dollars after adopting a green philosophy.

Professor Raston received his PhD from UWA and then worked in many of the world's leading Universities before coming back to his academic roots. Recently awarded a five year ARC Professorial Fellowship for work on nano-chemistry and green chemistry, the Professor's work, in collaboration with colleagues, seeks to make green chemistry applicable in more fields and he is currently researching the development of new pharmaceuticals using these benign chemical technologies.

His group is also involved in developing new ways to make nano particles for many different applications, such as drug delivery and device technology, which can also result in 'greener' ways of doing things.;
