Australia's athletes are known as some of the best in the world, but they could not hope to maintain the health and fitness of their joints and muscles nor recover from sometimes devastating injuries without the dedication of orthopaedic surgeons such as Winthrop Professor David Wood.
Since being appointed Head of the Unit of Orthopaedics at the University of Western Australia in 1994, Winthrop Professor David Wood has consistently sought to improve and further research into treating injuries associated with bones, joints, muscles and ligaments as well as understanding those parts of the body better.
Under his guidance The Orthopaedic Research Laboratories have attracted funding from a diverse number of both national and international organizations and have consequently become one of the leading centres of research into orthopaedics.
Particularly interested in orthopaedic oncology, Wood has also worked with a number of leading orthopaedic surgeons from around the globe. His passion for his field is shown in the fact that he is the founder of the Perth Bone and Tissue Bank, which is part of an international network for limb salvage and orthopaedic reconstruction, as well as being Chairman of the WA Bone Tumour Registry Panel.
He has also constructed a musculoskeletal pathology course for orthopaedic trainees in Australia to ensure that the knowledge his research acquires can be shared nation wide.
