Winthrop Professor Ming-Hao Zheng

  Professor Ming-Hao Zheng

Ming-Hao Zheng was instrumental in introducing biological implants for knees to Perth. Until 2002, patients needing knee surgery had to send cartilage to Copenhagen for cell culture.

He now collaborates with a German biotechnology company, Verigen International, in the only facility in the southern hemisphere, for this medical technology.

Winthrop Professor Zheng, Director of Research in Orthopaedic Surgery (School of Surgery and Pathology), has a distinguished academic career in the field of osteoclast biology, bone pathology and orthopaedic tissue engineering.

He has produced more than 70 publications and five patents and has the ability to transform laboratory research into clinical practice.

Winthrop Professor Zheng has world wide collaborations with China, Germany, Japan, Sweden, Singapore, the UK and the USA.

He and his team currently focus on several projects including: molecular mechanism of intracellular vesicles transport of osteoclast; molecule discovery in relation to inhibition of bone resorption and induction of bone formation; matrix-induced Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (growing cartilage from a patient’s own knee); autologous stem cell therapy and bioscafolds; and clinical evaluation of orthopaedic tissue engineering products.
