Research Training

    UWA offers a wide range of research training events and training resources for HDR students including drop-in sessions, workshops, writing retreats and online modules.

    • The Research Training Events flyer provides an overview of events according to stage of candidature. Use this flyer to help develop your training plan in HDRhub.
    • Register for online or in-person events using the HDRhub Event Calendar. The HDRhub Research Training and Skills Analysis: Student Guide provides support for HDRhub event registration, skills assessment, training plans and training logs. The HDRhub Calendar lists events offered by the GRS, the UWA Careers Centre, the UWA Centre for Applied Statistics, the UWA Library and more. All events are mapped to the Vitae Skills Assessment that is available in HDRhub.
    • Each month you will also be sent a GRS Newsletter reminding you of upcoming events. Past newsletters are available in the GRS LMS Organisations for students and staff.
    • All GRS resources are available in the GRS Organisation in the LMS including the Research Skills Toolkit.

    GRS Events: Workshops, Masterclasses, Seminars and Writing Retreats

    The GEOs offer a range of research training events.

    • Research Proposal and Thesis & Viva Examination events are held every month.
    • Research Foundations, Research Productivity, Reading & Note-taking, Academic Writing, Writing a Journal Paper, Conference Skills and MS Word for Thesis Writers events are held at least once a year.
    You can find these workshops in the HDRhub Events Calendar. If you are unable to attend, the booklets, slides are more are available for you to download at any time from the LMS.

    GRS Drop-in Sessions

    The GEOs are also available to answer question in online and in-person drop-in sessions.

    • Drop-in online to the Research Proposal and Thesis & Viva Examination Q&A Sessions offered in MS Teams every two weeks.
    • Drop-in to the GRS Q&A Sessions held in-person every second week. Discuss any of your candidature concerns with a GEO.
    • Sign up for the GRS Online Connect group that meets online every two weeks. This informal meeting is designed to help connect onshore and offshore students.

    GRS Resources and Research Skills Toolkit

    Included in the GRS LMS is the Research Skills Toolkit. This online, work-at-your-own-pace toolkit is made up of five core programmes: Becoming a Researcher, Ethical Research, Research Methods, Disseminating your Research and Beyond Research. Each programme is designed to align with a different stage in your research journey, providing the skills and knowledge to become an effective researcher throughout your research career.

    3MT Program & Competition

    3MT 2022 Participants

    The Three Minute Thesis (3MT)? program develops research communication skills. Competitors give an engaging and dynamic talk on their research topic to a non-specialist audience in just 3 minutes. A video of the 2022 Gala Event is available here and all of the 3MT 2023 videos are available here.

    Prizes are awarded to the winner and the runner-up as selected by the judges and to the Peoples' Choice winner selected by the audience. The doctoral student whose talk is judged the best will represent UWA at the Asia-Pacific 3MT competition. Finalists will also be selected to enter the Matariki 3MT competition

    Graduate Education Officers

    GEOsThe Graduate Education Officers (GEOs) are responsible for providing generic skills development and training to higher degree by research students across all disciplines at UWA and also coordinate the UWA Supervisor Development Program.
